From alternative acoustic to hip-hop/r&b to pop, US producer 100 Akres creates music that connects with people on an emotional level. Interview below
Where are you from?
Born in Brooklyn, raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and currently living in London.
What made you move to London?
A combination of many things, but I mainly wanted to get a taste of the music scene out here after hearing about it from so many people. Aside from the commercial music, people here seem to be more open minded about music…..actually about life in general.
How would you classify your sound?
I can’t really put it into one category. Whatever genre I am working on at the moment, I put my best hand forward.
When you’re not producing what do you listen to?
Studio One, John Mayer, Squarepusher, Ghostface, and (pre 2000) Nas & Mobb Deep.
When did you know you wanted to make music for a living?
While attending college, I was skipping class to finish up beats on my Yamaha RMX1.
Are your family and friends supportive?
At first, they didn’t think I was serious….until I moved to L.A. Ever since, they’ve been supportive.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from listening to anything on vinyl and from art exhibits. Oh…can’t forget the Jaylib album, changed my life.
Would you rather DIY or sign with a major label?
DIY. I’ve seen so many talented artists get shelved by majors. If do one day decide to go major, it would have to be a situation where I would have most of the control over my product.
What do you think about the current state of hip hop?
The current state of hip hop is good, but not great. Yes, we have tons more crap because of the digital revolution but there is also a lot of good hip hop out there. Unfortunately, you just have to look a bit harder. I’m hoping once artists get a good grasp of how to navigate the new business model (whatever that may be), we will get more good music consistently.
What is the hardest part of what you do?
Balancing life….friends, family, girlfriend, bills.
How do you define success?
Success is making a living from doing what you LOVE on your own terms.
