Hello, What’s your new release “Senso Data” about?
HI!
I want to tell a story through the music. But I don’t really want to explain it at all. I know that I need 3 records as a trilogy to write it. Senso Data is the beginning. It is still a mystery to me. Hard to explain because music for me is about getting out of reality. I make music that I would like to listen to as a teenager. Most times, to me, it’s talking
about teenage time left, contemporary frustration, love and time that goes by. Senso Data is great I think, because if you feel different or a little bit curious (To be different is to be normal, isn’t it?), if you leave this record in your player, you don’t need drugs, it works without!! Senso as “popular” is the human side and data as “computer” is the digital side. But who is the machine?Who are Popular Computer and how did the project start?
PC are a computer and myself. I have lived in Paris for 13 years. I come from a village in the south of Brittany in France. When I’m fed up, I go over there and run with music in my ears… I had a peaceful and free childhood with good and bad memories. I adored the girls. I liked to dance, to skate, and to ride my BMX. I was wild and I did not like school. I am still like that but I am curiously shyer now.
My big brother used to listen to Kraftwerk and J.M Jarre much more than other music. I like my brother and I do music for him. When we were younger, to fall asleep in the evening, he created a rhythm beat with his mouth and I the instruments with mine. On TV we’d rather listen to credits music than to the movie story…
The idea of Popular Computer as a band name came to me when I started to compose on a cheap computer in 1998. But Popular Computer was born in Paris in 2002 after having composed the track “I can’t forget you”. Popular Computer means that Personal Computers became popular because today computers are cheaper and powerful. Everyone is able to do something with the machine. In others words the Personal Computer and digital writing became democratic in rich countries. How do you define your sound?
The electronic sound of the past and the acoustic sound of the future… Hum!? I’m too much involved, I don’t know. How do you see today’s electro music scene in France?
Maybe the electro music scene in Paris is like a mafia no? Godfathers and sons, I guess!? The electro music scene in France is excellent, and it changes quickly but not radically. It’s a strange phenomenon through the world, there are lots of djs but not lots of producers.Influences and family?
A laptop, a keyboard, and my domestic computer.Where would you be without internet?
At home with my family and my music, that’s it! But without computer I’m not Popular Computer and without
my family I’m nothing. So without internet Popular Computer music will live just at home.As an artist, what would be the perfect online service?
Internet could be a BIG radio. A software will play all the music inside but in a democratic way, with an intelligent program of course. Artists should be paid at equitable rates… But I think the perfect service for a band is Internet itself.Digital or Physical, is there a place for both?
Physical: we need people to make records, put them in the record shops, you need a distributor, deals, merchandising, LIVE, press, video clip, pictures, fans, manager, agent, artwork, we have to be nice with everybody,
we have to be handsome, we need a plane, a tour bus, some drugs etc…that’s rock ’n’ roll baby!!
Digital: we need the music…physically. How do you use Fairtilizer today?
I listen to the music. It’s easy to make the ideal playlist. It’s quite like the BIG radio I have been talking about just above, with a great and better sound on Fairtilizer! Can you tell us about your live that is posted along with this interview?
I’m currently making a new album. The second part of my music story. It will be finished at the end of March. It’s about the human and sun heat… But «live», you mean the computer live I did at Womb in Tokyo of course!!
It was great from the airport to the airport. Kana is a girl from the womb staff. She took care of me. We ate together some really good Japanese food etc.
Shinichi Osawa is a great performer, I think he’s the best at this moment. He mixed an ABBA song into an electro trash sound!! It was crazy. He’s nice and friendly he is. I played 80% of Popular Computer music and Womb is the
perfect place! I had a room at the Excel hotel too, It was like in a Coppola film, I mean the romantic side… I love Tokyo, I’m going back soon…I feel like a bird in Japan.Smoking or non smoking clubs?
I don’t mind. When I’m allowed I smoke. But I’m just a computer addict… I smoked at Womb in a frantic way!! But in France maybe it’s better without and now we are not smoking itanymore. The future of BSS?
Do you mean the Business Support System? or Blum-Shub-Smale? lolAnd the music industry?
I think the industry feels ok! Because It’s an industry: you need people to make records, put in the record shops,
you need a distributor, deals, merchandising, LIVE, press, video clip, pictures, fans, manager, agent, artwork, you have to be nice, you need handsome people, you need a plane, a tour bus, some drugs etc…that’s rock ’n’ roll since the beginning it’s the same!!Do you live off music today?
I feel free.
