little boots: playlist and interview

“She’s a true artist in this world of bulllshit” says synth pop godfather Alexander Robotnick. A piano, 1 Moog, 3 Korg’s, 1 Tenorion, 1 stylophone and lots of tea: it’s time for pop princess Little Boots to show the world what she’s made of. Open your ears, she will go far.

Can you introduce yourself?

Hi I’m Little Boots. I like writing songs and nerding around with keyboards.

What’s goin’ on in Little Boots’ world right now?

I’m in a van driving back from Newcastle in the snow watching the Talking Heads documentary ‘Stop Making Sense’ and answering interviews, I like to multi task.

How would you describe your sound?

Hopefully well written, intelligent pop songs with interesting production, human synthesizers, space pop disco fantasy…

What’s Arecibo about?

The American EP ‘Arecibo’ is two tracks and two remixes on a limited 12″ vinyl and digital download. Arecibo was a message sent from a huge telescope to space to try and make contact with aliens.

You are currently working with Joe from Hot Chip on your first album, how is this going?

Really great, Joe and I have done 3 tracks and are maybe working on another at the moment.

You are a keyboard and noise machine freak aren’t you? Can you tell us about?

I like synthesizers and gadgets, I have lots of synths, new and old, a Tenorion which is a japanese sequencer of lights, a stylophone, a synth theramin, lots of percussion bits, glockenspiel… anything I can find really.

How did you get into music?

I’ve been playing piano since I was 5, I trained classically and was in my school chapel choir, then I learned jazz and played in lots of big bands and swing groups…then I was in some punk and indie bands and then finally I went solo and did this. I got into electronic stuff when I was about 16 and started listening to Yes and Pink Floyd, I sold my harp for a synth and it went from there.

What are you currently listening to besides electronic/club music?

Talking Heads. Gary Numan. The Cars. Madonna, a lot of early Madonna. Joni Mitchell.

How is the scene in London at the moment?

I’m away a lot so don’t get too involved in the whole thing at the moment, I’ve actually only been living here under a year so still have a lot to learn. Personally I’m really bored of the club scene and electro nights, there are some great things like Cocadisco going on in Dalston. The band we are touring with ‘Heartbreak’ are brilliant.

What’s your favourite animal? Unicorns?

Probably a shrew. I look a bit like one apparently.

What’s your current favorite gadget?

My secret weapon, I just got a new one after my old one being broke for ages…I can’t reveal exactly but it’s a type of theremin.

How important is the internet for you and where do you see it going?

The internet is very important to connect to people and get music out there all over the world, and it has enabled a lot of things for me. However I think it’s very important to reach out further than that, its easy to get a big online presence but in reality have very few people know who you are or what you do. As for where the internet is going, that’s a very big question and I don’t think I’m really qualified to answer!

What was you best night out and what would be your dream team line up for a party?

Best night out is probably jagermeister at my house with my girls dressed in the style of Buffy Season one listening to 90s classics, then Cocadisco in Dalston to dance all night and probably end up at the bagel shop on brick lane with lots of drunken photos. Dream team (current) line up would be Heartbreak, Fan Death, Metronomy, LCD Soundsystem, Hercules & Love Affair, Hot Chip, Ladytron, Daft Punk.
