Crushed Records & Purple Crush: interview

July 27th, 2009 | Posted in electronic, indie, pop

They will do ANYTHING POP! Brooklyn’s duo Purple Crush are children of the 80’s and blog-house faves! New track out from their “You been crushed Vol. 1″ compilation available via Fairtilizer + bonus interview below:

What are you up to at the moment?
Well, other than running our label, we are currently working closely with the producer that is responsible for the development and signing of Lady Gaga on tracks for other artists and ourselves.

Who is Crushed Records?
It’s run by Purple Crush, and we are a husband/wife pop team.

What’s your compilation “You Been Crushed Vol. 1″ about?
Well, after a series of Purple Crush releases, we started putting out other artists, like Mike Genius and WZRDZ, and that spawned an influx of artists wanting to be on the label. We found ourselves surrounded by so much amazing talent that we decided a compilation would be a good way to launch the whole community, and thus named it after our blog.

What’s your musical background?
Jared was trained as a jazz guitarist, and i a modern dancer.

How would you define the Crushed sound?
Raw underground Pop

Influences and family?
At this point it’s starting to sound cliche, but we are children of the 80s, and are therefore heavily influenced by 80s pop, but in a post hiphop world.

You are just releasing your first compilation in a difficult time for the music industry: how do you see the future for it?

I sort of feel like we’re over the hump as far as difficulty in the industry. Digital makes money, costs very little. Stars can be made instantly on the net and the major labels have finally caught up to the underground.

As an artist how do you use & see the web today? How important is it for you?
Well, it was extremely important for us starting back in 2006, when we first started getting blog love. we’ve been able to tour extensively off that notoriety. but something is happening right now, there’s a shift occurring in the web, blogs are dying, myspace is near its end, and twitter is totally taking over, destroying faster than it creates. (twitter.com/youbeencrushed) its not gonna go away unless the sunspots really do occur in 2012.

How do you see it evolving in the coming years?
Communication will continue to become more instant, subscription based content as opposed to locally stored content, and we see rumors and emotions becoming more and more exposed and influencial. someones twitter could actually crash the stock market.

As an artist, what would be your dream online music service?
iTunes, but without the 30% cut that they take and more promotion for lesser known artists.

As a label, what do you expect from your artistsl in 2009?
Creativity, integrity and originality.

What’s your favourite digital and physical format and why?
Physical format would be small portable USB harddrives and digital format would be 16 bit wav file, its high quality and compatible with most samplers.
