Curated to preserve the artistic integrity of the in house Band/DJs ‘What Kind Of Breeze Do You Blow?’ and to release some great gems buried under the rubble of hype releases and buzz bands. Brilliantine is ran by 2 friends who live on the opposite ends of the globe in separate time zones. Read our interview with the co-owner Andrew Guay below:
How did Brilliantine come to life and what is a Blog Label?
Brilliantine was always meant to happen. Sometimes it just takes a while. We’ve both been so invested in music over the years, it only made sense that we take that energy and make something we love out of it, a label with our favourite music and our favourite artists that we can focus our energy on and really make something of. I guess we’re a ‘blog label’ but it seems like that means nothing more than a redirection of passion, from putting in the work for other people to really making it happen on your own. It means we know how to tell people about what we like, and we know there’s a wide population out there with which we share mutual interests. What formats do you do your releases on?
Just digital at the moment as we have some great releases we want to share quickly, but we will be adding limited runs on vinyl very, very soon.Do you think physical is dead?
If by physical you mean $15 compact discs at the electronics store, sure. Otherwise, it’s no more dead than books. Might make less money from them now, but if that’s your biggest concern you ought to just open one of those electronics stores. How you found difficulties with getting your label recognized with all the other well funded independent labels out there?
Our ability to be recognized seems proportionate with how visible we make ourselves – to date, we have had an exclusively digital presence, but we’re right on the edge of a substantial push into the ‘real world’ with Brilliantine tours and events.
How are bloggers accepting the idea of new home based labels?
I guess they just decide to start up their own? Most good bloggers don’t seem to care where the music comes from, so long as it’s good. We focus on music that is good, that we like, so this shouldn’t really be a problem. Is it time consuming, running a label all by yourselves?
Yes, which is really nice as it’s what we enjoy doing the most. I know myself that my only wish right now is that I could devote even more time to it, and I’m working towards that goal every day.How does small labels with little resources help out artists?
It’s all in the people you work with. We are passionate about what we love, and effective at spreading that passion. Anyone can put a song up on a digital store, but we offer a trusted brand that sets a benchmark to anyone who is paying attention. We put in the time to get their music to as many people as we can, and we let the artist focus on making more music, and focus on their own interests. What’s is you promotional strategy?
That’s a secret.Did sites like Fairtilizer help?
Well, it helped out a lot as we were establishing our label by offering a sort of ‘listening booth’ format to really explain the intent of what we’re going to release. Without having to send giant files around, we were able to give lots of people the chance to get a good first impression and remember us as we grow. What’s coming up next on your label?
We’ve got a fantastic single from Mirror People, who is just on a roll right now. Some great mixes with that, too. Another EP is on the way from Montauk, who we really anticipate taking off in the next year. We’ve got to keep quiet about everything else at the moment, but there’s a lot in the works.
Is there a release in progress that you are particularly excited about unleashing?
The first album we’re releasing, this winter, by What Kind of Breeze Do You Blow?
